摘要：It has been proposed that a writer shows systematic preference for particular syntactic structures and that these structures may correspond to other formal aspects-theme, imagery, tone-of novel or poem (Ohmann 1964). Virginia Woolf's prose is characterized by sentences that present processing difficulty for the reader due to her failure to adhere to constraints governing syntactic rules. It is my assumption that these ungrammatical or unacceptable sentences are not accidental nor the result of negligence on Woolf’s part but rather serve to reinforce certain thematic and structural aspects of her prose. This paper attempts to describe Woolf's syntactic deviance within the framework of transformational grammar. Ohmann suggests that transformational grammar provides an appropriate framework for the analysis of literary style because optional transformations, in general, correspond to stylistic differences and the use or non-use of a particular optional transformation reflects a stylistic choice (conscious or unconscious) on the part of the writer.
