The study was conducted in the W National Park of Niger, which belongs to the W Regional Park of Niger located in West Africa. The databases used are composed of two Landsat images TM and ETM + of November 1984 and November 2002, respectively. For each image a supervised classification using maximum likelihood was applied followed by a post classification to eliminate isolated pixels. During the classification some verification tests were performed on the basis of reference data collected in the study area. Two land cover maps of 1984 and 2002 were made, with 9 thematic classes identified. The dynamics of change shows a short increase of woodland from 1 % of the study area in 1984 to 2.7 % in 2002. Spatial landscape dynamics analysis has revealed a process of woodland land cover creation. This process assumes the landscape fragmentation in the study area, which can influence the biodiversity conservation in this protected area.
