It enables to anticipate and interprete human behaviors and is essential in regulating social interactions. The present review exposes current knowledge concerning this high level cognitive function which entails both decoding and reasoning about cognitive and affective mental states, of first- or second-order. Its links with executive functions and memory are often highlighted and might explain deficits of ToM in patients with brain diseases. Furthermore, age effect on ToM remains unclear and results are often contradictory, although recent findings have shed a more accurate light of age effects on the multidimensional ToM.
