After left-sided lesions, bilateral deficits such as autotopoagnosia and finger agnosia. After right-sided lesions, deficits concerning the left hemibody, such as hemiasomatognosia, anosognosia for motor and sensory impairments, and somatoparaphrenia and high-order somatosensory deficits such as phantom limb phenomena and somatoagnosic hallucinations. These manifestations refer to disorders of body image. The temporary loss or alteration of sensory input may affect the perception of body image, suggesting that this representation, especially the size and shape of body is dynamic, and may be importantly modulated by sensory manipulations. The purpose of this study is a literature's review of different effects produced by sensory stimulations on bodily representations disorders. From 31 different publications, 4 distinct sensory manipulations were identified: caloric vestibular stimulation, optokinetic stimulation, transelectrical stimulation and visuomotor prismatic adaptation. Unlike the effects of sensory manipulations on spatial neglect where reversibility has been reported following many stimuli, the effects of vestibular stimulation are predominant on the troubles of corporeal space. The afferent vestibular inputs may facilitate the restoration of body spatial representations in patients with somatosensory deafferentation of peripheral or central origin. These positive effects could be based on activation by the vestibular stimulation of a wide cerebral network, concerned with the spatial representation of the size of body parts including predominantly the temporoparietal junction, with a strong right hemisphere dominance.
