One of them was within-subject, the modality of grapho-phonemic translation (letter-to-sound mapping). The other was between-subject, the gender of participants. The effect has been addressed for two phonological tasks, phoneme and rhyme detection, with pseudo-words varying in terms of regular (transparent translation, or irregular (non-transparent translation). À divided visual field procedure has been used with right-handed healthy, male and female volunteers. Our results showed that both phonological tasks were left-hemisphere lateralized. We only observed a significant effect of the grapho-phonemic translation modality on the hemispheric specialization for phoneme detection, in male participants. This result suggests that phoneme and rhyme detection seem to be different in terms of cognitive processes, although both are phonological tasks. Our results also suggest that the two hemispheres are equipotent for processing transparent stimuli, although they have different strategies, linguistic for the left and visual for the right hemisphere. On the other hand, the non-transparent stimuli always need strong hemispheric specialisation, generally left, as the strategy used for processing them is always linguistics.
