PM refers to memory for activities to be performed in the future. First, we will define PM. Afterwards, we will summarize the data concerning its perturbations in healthy aging and Alzheimer disease. Current literature on PM in healthy aging shows inconsistent results. One view is that PM decreases with age, the other is that it is insensitive to age effects. Analyse of literature demonstrates that PM decline is larger in laboratory and time-based studies than in naturalistic conditions and event-based situations. Moreover, researches are consistent with a multiprocess view of PM, that is it involves different types of processes, varying according to the procedures. Researches on PM in Alzheimer disease are very rare. The results are clear-cut and show a deficit in prospective remembering. Furthermore, PM seems to be more vulnerable than retrospective memory in early stage of Alzheimer disease. However, at a moderate stage of the disease, retrospective would become more severely impaired than PM. Characteristics of PM deficit in Alzheimer disease remain unclear and other researches need to be performed.
