Semen quality has declined, and abnormalities of the reproductive tract have increased. Reprotoxic chemicals are currently of great interest to public authorities. The French Agency for Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (Afsset) proposed in 2004 to conduct an expert assessment to determine human toxicity values (HTVs) based on reprotoxic endpoints. One of the objectives was to identify chemicals with reprotoxic properties in order to set priorities for toxicological reviews and derivation of reprotoxic HTVs. A list of chemicals that are probably or likely reprotoxic was compiled, based on European regulatory classifications and other non-regulatory lists of reprotoxic chemicals: 445 substances were identified. We developed a method for prioritization, based on the relevance of the data sources and on the occurrence of the substances in the available priority lists. Each of the 445 substances was scored to take into account their potential hazards and exposure, as a simplified approach to the two essential parameters of risk assessment. The total score was calculated as the product of indirect hazard and exposure scores, weighted to produce a single scale of values. The chemicals of highest concern are some phthalates, metals, alkylphenols and glycol ethers. Scoring approaches are widely used to define priorities at regional, national and international levels. Despite the limitations identified, this method appears useful as a preliminary approach to the identification of chemicals for which additional studies should be conducted.
