These differences were assessed by a standardised morbidity ratio based on public hospital admissions in 2000. A clear regional effect is visible, with a wide difference between the northern and northeastern cities, where the level of admissions was high, and southwestern cities, where it was much lower. The proportions of inhabitants employed in the manufacturing sector, with a low level of education, or living in inadequate housing (without bathrooms) were all positively correlated with the morbidity ratio. City size did not appear to matter. Specific analyses for children younger than 15 years and adults older than 65 showed the same spatial organisation.
