Flahault, 34060 Montpellier, France Key words: biodegradation, drug residues, pharmaceutical preparation, risk assessment, waste disposal, fluid, water Page(s) : 243-7 Published in: 2006 After therapeutic or diagnostic use, pharmaceuticals and/or their metabolites are continuously released into the aquatic environment, primarily from sewage treatment plants (STP), which cannot always completely eliminate them. They may therefore reach surface waters. Because pharmaceuticals are designed to be biologically active, they may interact with specific biological targets. As part of the National Program of Ecotoxicology (ENIMED), concentrations of some drugs were measured in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants; these concentrations were consistent with the literature. Ecological and human risks related to drug residues in water need to be evaluated.
