They may therefore reach surface waters. Because pharmaceuticals are designed to be biologically active, they may interact with specific biological targets. As part of the National Program of Ecotoxicology (ENIMED), concentrations of some drugs were measured in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants; these concentrations were consistent with the literature. Ecological and human risks related to drug residues in water need to be evaluated.
