摘要:Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation of certain socio demographic characteristics and health-related lifestyle factors with oral health status of enlisted men of the Hellenic Navy. The purpose was to use the results within the scope of Health Promotion and Health Education policies and interventions organized by the Hellenic Navys Health Services. Materials and Methods: In this cross- sectional survey, a representative sample of 1267 healthy male conscripts was conducted in two training centres. Data was collected by means of self- administered questionnaires. The response rate was 83.8%. Demographic characteristics, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, physical activity and adherence to the Mediterranean diet were associated with oral health status. Statistical analysis was processed by means of the Statistical Package of Social Sciences, SPSS 13.0. Results: Male recruits had a mean age of 24.6 years (SD=3.2 years); 59.5% of the participants reported good oral health status and 35.1% of them had visited a dentist during the past six months. The residence of the majority was in rural areas. Of the dental visits, 59.4% were arranged for a regular dental check up. Recruits with higher educational level as well as individuals that were not using tobacco or alcohol and also had healthy nutritional habits, reported better oral health status. Conclusions: Demographic characteri- stics, socio-economic background, educational level and life-style factors are interrelated and affect oral health status as well as the utilization of oral health services. Therefore, all these dimensions should be considered as potential targets for future health promotion strategies and interventions in the Hellenic Armed Forces.
