标题：Prevalence of tobacco use among school children, exposure to passive smoking and their knowledge level about tobacco control in Chennai city, Tamil Nadu – A School Based Survey

摘要：Introduction: Tobacco use in India is a major health problem starting during early adolescence. Understanding the nature of the problem is crucial to undertake urgent steps to curb tobacco use. Prevalence of tobacco use among school children was studied in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Methods: School children (n=15186, 45% boys and 55% girls) between 10 to 15 years of age from 42 randomly chosen schools completed a seven item pre-tested structured questionnaire. Questions covered were ever use, future intention to use tobacco, usage by immediate family members and passive smoking exposure, procuring tobacco, students persuading immediate family members to quit tobacco and observation of sale of tobacco with in 100 meters of their schools. Results: Ever use of tobacco was 3.2% (boys 2.6%; girls 3.7%) and 1.6% reported intention to use tobacco in future. Pre teen (11 (5.8%) and 12 (3.7%)) and 15 years (3.6%) appear to be vulnerable to tobacco use. Immediate family members use of tobacco was reported as 56.3% and 39.5% were exposed to passive smoking at home More than half of the students (59.1%) repeatedly persuaded their parents to quit tobacco. One in four (28.6%) reported that they procure tobacco products for their immediate family members and 85.4% students reported to have noticed sale of tobacco within 100 meters of their school. Conclusion: Children as early as 10 years are using tobacco. Exposure to passive smoking is a major concern. Results highlight an urgent need for intervention to protect children from passive smoking and tobacco usage.
