摘要:This report has four parts. Part 1 focuses on the role international agricultural research institutions should play in meeting the rapid growth in maize demand that is anticipated during the next 20 years. Constraints to maize production in the developing world are prioritized globally and by region, including factors such as levels of poverty and subsistence farming. Technological responses to the constraints are outlined and another prioritization exercise is conducted to determine where and in which technologies public sector research investments would make the most impact. Respective roles of the public and private sectors' maize research efforts are delineated, as are areas for collaboration. Part 2 of the report presents an overview of CIMMYT's Global Maize Impacts Study, wherein the contributions of public and private sector maize breeding are assessed in terms of impact in the developing world. Part 3 discusses future trends in maize production and trade with particular emphasis on the United States, the MERCOSUR countries, and China. Part 4 presents statistics on world maize production and consumption.
