摘要：Mr. Place, in opening the discussion, remarked that "One of the purposes of the Association is to maintain or further the interest of the library exchange. The purpose is two-fold, to dispose of material not needed and to obtain books and volumes which we do need and yet perhaps cannot afford. I hope you will talk rather seriously as you have in the past and give us the benefit of your ideas". Mr. Place then called on Miss Marcia Noyes to tell of the early history of the Exchange. Miss Noyes: "When the Association was first organized the main idea stressed was that much material was being lost to the medical library world because of the lack of organization for purposes of exchange. Libraries were stocked with duplicate material and something had to be done to conserve that material and place it where the public might obtain it. The real reason for founding the Association was to further the exchange of material and salvage this mass of material. We did not exist a year before the exchange started in Philadelphia. Later it was transferred to Baltimore. If there is any question about the early exchange I would be glad to answer it. The original idea was to have a central clearing house but this has been outgrown for many years, of course, and the present system is an outgrowth."
