摘要：The late Dr. John S. Billings has found in the accomplished editor of the Index Medicus a sympathetic and appreciative biographer. The story of his life is well told, from the time when as a poor boy, dependent almost wholly upon his own exertions, he secured an education as a physician and after a brief period of hospital service found himself thrust into the responsibilities of an army surgeon in charge of field and base hospitals, during the Civil War. He bore these burdens so well that he was given one position of trust after another, until at the end of the four years' struggle he was found to be a ripe scholar, a sanitarian, an authority upon vital statistics and a planner of hospitals. His subsequent labors in the Army Medical Museum and in the Library of the Surgeon General are clearly and interestingly depicted. For more than fifty years, by his writings, his organizing abilitv and his clear vision of the requirements of medical education and traininig in the United States, he showed himself to be one of our most far-sighted and useful physicians. His abilities should, in fact, never have been lost to medicine, valuable as were his labors during the last seventeeni years of his life to the New York Public Library.
