摘要:The paper reviews the use of the term »formal correspondence« in translation studies and its relationship to the term »translation equivalence«. It is shown that correpondence is established at the level of langue and equivalence at the level of parole. Since correspondence is the product of contrastive analysis of (parts of) linguistic systems, the term »contrastive correspondence« is to be preferred to »formal correspondence« (thus also avoiding the possible ambiguity of the term »formal«). The author presents his own method of extracting contrastive correspondents from translationally equivalent texts, relying on the notion of »backtranslation«, and describes their place among the elements that constitute the context of situation in which translation takes place and their role in achieving equivalence.
