Governments, as much as society, accuse the media of influencing in the rising feeling of insecurity in various countries in the region. Studies, for their part, show us that the media impact in the fear, but not in an homogenic fashion in all the population, nor in all genres in the same way; in parallel, the media panorama is changing rapidly. In this context, retaking the axis of the debate about the reception of the media reports about insecurity from studies in Anglo-Saxon and Latin American countries could help to question myths, consider realities and nuances, and, as such, contribute to the necessary discussion about the role of the media.
