Four alternatives for weed control were evaluated: mowing, every seven weeks and every 14 weeks; green covers, kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and crotalaria(Crotalaria sagittalis); and a control treatment. The presence and the absence of a biodegradable banana fiber sheet (LB) were evaluated in all the treatments. The results showed that there was no effect of the LB for the evaluated parameters (number of leaves, height and diameter of the stems). The degradation of the LB was less in the kidney bean treatment. The lowest weed biomass was found in the kidney bean treatment at the base of the plants and in the treatment mowing every seven weeks between the bananas rows. The number of species at the base of the plants was the lowest in the kidney bean treatment with LB, and between banana rows, it was when mowing every 14 weeks without LB. The three species of weeds predominant in the ten treatments were: paspalum (Paspalum fasciculatum), phyllanthus (Phyllanthus niruri) and poyolillo (Cyperus tenuis).
