Patients experiencing total pain face not only somatic symptoms but also deep psychological changes and existential (spiritual) suffering. This type of pain continually reminds about the coming death, and becomes a dominating, but not the only one, cause of suffering in patients undergoing oncological treatment. Physical pain can be controlled in most cases using available means. However, effective management of cancer pain requires not only skillful application of drugs adjusted to the character and intensity of pain, but also attentive nursing care, and psychological and spiritual help.
