摘要:Introduction: Overweig ht and o besit y are t he fifth lead ing risk fo r global deaths. It is not only the degree of excess fat that is important, but also its dist ributio n in the bo dy that determines t he health risks asso ciated with the co ndition. The aim of the study is to assess the knowledge of medical students pertaining to obesity. Methods: A cross-sectional descript ive stud y was conducted among first-year medical student s in March of 2013. A universal sampling method was employed, and all first -year students were included as subjects in the study. The total samp le included 138 students. After obtaining informed consent , a pre-tested semi-st ructured questionnaire was admini-stered to each of t he participants. Utmost care was taken to maintain privacy and confident iality. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 1 7. Frequency distributions and percentages were calcu lat ed for all the variables. Results: A lack of physical activity and t he presence of stress were identified as the most common risk facto rs for obesity development. Appro ximately, 73(52.9%) students were of the incorrect opinio n that gynaecoid obesit y was mo re dangerous than android obesit y. The most commo n strategy cited b y 107(77.5%) respondent s fo r preventio n o f obesit y was regu lar exercise. Conclusion: The study revealed that alt hough the majorit y o f the medical students were aware of t he risk factors of obesity, many gaps, which need to be bridged, were identified in their knowledge. These med ical students could be actively involved in awareness campaigns for delaying the onset of lifest yle diseases.
