摘要:Cilies, Poverly and Developmenl is a team-written text for undergraduates and graduate students in geography, sociology, development studies, planning and other related fiefds. A perusal of the contents shows that Alan Gilbert, a geographer at University College, London, and Josef Gugler, a sociologist with mostly African experience, have taken a global view of third world urbanization. They start with a discussion of the world politieal economy and urban/regional spatial systems, then go on to migration, employment and housing; finally looking at the culture of cities, politics and planning. Most of the important concepts and arguments that should be mentioned in relation to such topies are touched upon, and the book attempts to thread an intelligent course through the various contemporary ideological and theoretical disputes. As the title might suggest, the authors take a sympathetic advocacy position on behalf of the poor.
