  • 摘要:A society's view of 'the others' ¨C populations situated at closer or further cultural (psychic) distance is deeply embedded into its historical, social, cultural and political milieu. Stereotypes and generalizations are still colloquially used today although official channels refrain from using them in order to be 'politically correct'. Cultural representations of other populations are dynamic; they change in time reflecting not only historical modifications in both populations (descript and descriptor) but also the influence of political ideologies, scientific and cultural movements and external influences. This paper discusses, in historical perspective, the cultural representation of 'others' in the Romanian geography textbooks in the early 20thCentury up until the end of World War II. The study has found that the way Romanian geography textbooks presented other cultures has changed in time reflecting the development of the discipline and domestic and international political events or cu rrents. Early textbooks in Romania used gross generalizations and stereotypes to emp hasize cultural differen ces among populations and often resorted to environmental determinism to explain those differences
