摘要：This article is meant as a comparative study of two remarkable yet very different films, Giorni e nuvole (2007) and Il divo (2008), in the belief that they may serve as an exemplary case study for two chief directions of Italian cinema in the twenty-first century. The choice of directors and films is dictated by the established career paths of Silvio Soldini and Paolo Sorrentino and by the critical and popular success worldwide of the two selected films. The principle argument is that the features of each work speak of one and the other directors' concerns and thrusts and that these ultimately stand in opposition of each other. The two films are examined consecutively within the broader context of Italian national cinema and in relation to pertinent literature and criticism. The analysis is conducted by putting to the test the relationship between the purported import of and the formal strategies adopted by each film in delivering their points.
