摘要:Roland Barthes's claim that"an entire world (social environment) is present in andsignified by food"1pinpoints the significance of food in one's socio-cultural as well asphysical existence.Indeed food constitutes an indispensable component of human life.It is, primarily, requisite for subsistence and is also associated with such wider concernsas customs, habits and attitudes. The assumption that food is mundane, perishable andthus not worth a serious consideration is a prejudice inherited from theancientworld, which set a higher value on the mind over the body.2This cultural bias has been calledinto question by recent studies, which, approaching the subject from variousperspectives, reveal that food, if supposedly trivial and commonplace, addresses a rangeof highly complex issues: semiological, cultural, anthropological, and even political.
