摘要:The main objective of this article is to analyse the trends in mean wage by gender and to establish if in Puerto Rico, as in many countries, there exists a gender wage gap. The main source of data was the Census of Population of Puerto Rico. In most countries there is a wage differential between men and women. Although in the last 40 years this gap has been closing, it is still persistent. Some explanations have been offered for these phenomena that range from cultural factors to plain discrimination. For example, in the United States wage gaps have been closing substantially between men and women, since the passing of the 1963 Equal Pay Act1, but there is still a significant gap that cannot be explained away by differences in experience between male and female workers in the labour market, and by the characteristics in the nature of the jobs undertaken.
