摘要：In the past few years we have seen many issues that have led to serious concerns about the river environment in Malaysia. These include inadequate supplies of water in big cities and unexpected floods threatening human lives and property, and the image of Malaysia has been compromised because of these recurring problems. This paper discusses the results of efforts to clean up the Penchala river in Kuala Lumpur. The Penchala river is a tributary of the Klang river that passes through the populous and important township of Damansara and Petaling Jaya City. Water quality with a special focus on metals content as reported by the Department of Environment of Malaysia is used to assess the state of pollution. The effectiveness of public participation, engineering and river works, and regulation by government are evaluated in the efforts to strive for a healthier Penchala river.
