摘要:Thirty years after its conception and development as a branch of social history, academic sport history is in a state of flux and increasingly influenced by a cultural paradigm inspired by postmodernism. In this article I examine the modernist assumptions of social history and the postmodernist assumptions of cultural history as they emerge in sport history. Whereas social history is ground in ideas about emancipation, empirical truths, and the past as a foundation for the present, cultural history embraces an explicitly self-conscious and reflexive form of thinking that recasts history as a constructed discourse of the past. As well as examining the conceptual, ideological, narratological and semiological features of both social and cultural history, I identify areas of accommodation between the two approaches and I discuss the potential for that accommodation to bloom into histories in which authors openly reflect on their work and their formats and methods, and reveal their ideological and political objectives as well as the limitations of their narratives.
