摘要:This study analyzes the extent to which textbooks by different authors and publishers are
distinct from each other and how original they are in terms of content and methodology.
Originality refers to inclusion of different and innovative methods and approaches in the
textbooks and to differentiation, in some degree, in the content among different products. The
paper analyzes ten history textbooks (History 1 and History 2) published between 1997 and
2006 in Turkey, based on a method of content analysis. The findings in the study suggest that
there has been no significant improvement in the originality of the textbooks despite a policy
of introducing a diverse set of products. The study finds that the reviewed textbooks by
different writers and publishers during the period are almost identical in terms of content and
methodology. The results of the research shed some light on the reasons for this problem. The
inclination of the Ministry of Education to hold the review and approval process of the
textbooks under its sole control appears to be the primary reason.
