摘要:Framing is an effective way of giving social meaning to a conflict and if solely defined by the official actors can
prove detrimental to the ideals of democracy. Using framing by source and systematic keyword analysis method,
this study examines the coverage of Naxal conflict in four national newspapers in the Indian media during four
months of 2009. The content analysis of 570 articles suggests an overwhelming presence of official sources in
the news reports while tribals and voices from non-official quarters remain acutely underrepresented. Media’s
attempt to give meaning to the Naxal conflict through the lens and voices of official sources creates an
undisputed credible narrative restricting any scope for the emergence of an anti-narrative. The analysis also
indicates that media gave excessive salience to violence, Naxal-military confrontation and government’s antinaxal
policy measures while leaving out the historical context and controversial issues, eliding any scope for
criticism
