摘要:Name calling is a powerful weapon of social control, since it points out, in the act of its use, certain social positions that should not be occupied by the individuals. However, what is considered as undesirable varies according to the culture, to the historic moment, to the age and depends on important gender roles. This article aimed to study which name calling would be considered more offensive, attributable to both men and women, for women and men adolescents in Brasilia. The objective was to analyze gender values in the responses as well as social control those responses exert in the act of name calling among adolescents. 380 questionnaires were administered: 243 in a private school (119 men, 124 women) and 137 in a public school (59 men and 78 women). The data was subjected to content analysis (Bardin, 1997). It was possible to apprehend in general the following categories: sexual behavior (active or passive), character traits (relational or self-investment), physical attributes, intellectual attributes, family, and personality. The most significant categories of name calling attributable to men were active sexual behavior and self-investment character traits; in relation to women, categories that stood out were passive sexual behavior and relational character traits. The data indicate that, despite the social changes, the values expected from men and women are still fairly traditional.
