It has been possible to detect an itinerary within Pier Damiani抯 works and actions through the focussing of some steps and significant focal points starting from his hagiographic works which bear witness to the various phases of Pier Damiani抯 action and his reaction to the defining of the reform process. There is an evident evolution in Pier Damiani抯 attitude from the beginning of his career to the end; his hagiography is a sensitive and extremely refined sensor of this development which reflects and incisively conveys the author抯 ideals of sanctity and his ascetic aspirations towards a reform. In the last years of his life Pier Damiani seemed to withdraw from the Roman ecclesiastical reform to turn towards a reform he deemed the best strong points of monasticism (Cluny and Montecassino) to involve them in his own reform projects.
