摘要:The phenomenon of bullying is a cause for concern among several educational agents, because of its prevalence in schools and the adverse consequences for health and welfare of victims and aggressors. The present study focuses on the incidence and nature of bullying behaviors in primary school children.
We applied the self-report questionnaire of Olweus (adapted by Oliveira & Tomás, 1994, cit. Pereira, 2002) to a sample of 240 students, from 2th to the 4th grade.
The results showed a prevalence of 30.42% of victims, 18.75% of bullies and 9.58% of bully-victims. The attacks frequently refer to verbal bullying and tend to occur mostly in the playground. The bullies are mainly colleagues in the same room or older. Most victims feel supported by peers, especially boys, although less than half of them tell the adults (teachers and parents). The boys reported being significantly more perpetrators and more victims of direct bullying behaviors, while girls reported being more victims of relational bullying. Boys tend to attack mostly boys and girls especially girls.
This high prevalence of bullying behaviors observed in the study highlights the need to implement intervention programs since the early years of schooling.
