摘要：During the nineteenth century, the Brazilian cities are marked by changes in its structure caused by the ideas of modernity that came to define a new way of ordering of urban space. It is the arrival of modern times that begins in the nineteenth century and is consolidated at the beginning of the twentieth century. The deployment of new equipment and services aimed at solving the many problems that afflict the cities. On this understanding, this study aims to examine the process of lighting the City of Parahyba, current João Pessoa - PB, during the nineteenth century and beginning of the century. And also to discuss ways and means by which it was deployed this type of service, and the transformations it has caused in the daily life of people of this city.
