摘要:In the present paper, we focus on the Programa de Educação Juvenil (PEJ, Juvenile Education Program) by the Municipal Education Department of the City of Rio de Janeiro (Smerj). Along this text, we track back PEJ’s history and describe its current characteristics. Our interest in studying PEJ derives essentially from its permanence and expansion along time and the age range of the students targeted by the program. By crossing these two aspects, we can notice one of the main tensions of PEJ: the positive subscription of the City of Rio de Janeiro to the precepts of the new Brazilian Education Policies and Bases Regulation concerning the offer of free basic education to all of those who did not have access to education as youngsters vis a vis the restrictive focus of the program on youngsters.
