摘要：This paper is based on about thirty interviews of livestock farmers from the French Northern Alps, questioned on their relationship and representations of "nature". First of all, this survey reveals an original professional relationship with “nature”. The diversity of the alpine flora is appreciated from the point of view of animal production. All farmers are concerned by the influence of diversity on the appetency of grass. This influence is regarded as a positive fact by most of the farmers we met. Such an opinion, motivated by professional skills, is frequently associated with aesthetic considerations. The beauty of landscapes, animals or flowers, takes a place in their opinion on “nature”. But as soon as the word “biodiversity” is introduced in the interview, the views change. Farmers tend then to justify themselves, claiming that if the biodiversity present in their fields is of any value, it means that they have worked well and deserve recognition. Farmers’ representations of biodiversity are in fact changing. These representations are directly related to professional practices (persistence of gathering activities, dominant professional point of view on fauna and flora) but they are also evolving in response to events (i.e. the arrival of the wolf in the French Alps) and contacts with activists of nature protection NGO’s and environmental managers.
