摘要:Globalization is considered in this work essentially as a technological phenomenon
that causes a reduction in the cost of transport and communications. As a
consequence of this, economies tend to open, the diffusion of knowledge increases,
and the role of technology enhances.
The hypothesis we put forward in this work is that globalization, as defined
above, is not something that has occurred very frequently throughout modern history.
Indeed, we might identify three waves of globalization; one that began in 15th century
spurred by the discovery of America, and which brought about the emergence of
Europe as a block. The second wave of globalization started with Industrial Revolution
and caused the emergence of North America as a block. The present wave of globalization
began in the final decades of the last century and has caused the emergence
as an hegemonic block of the countries that constitute the Pacific Ring. The controversial issue of the effects of the globalization and, in particular, its
impact on convergence and poverty is studied attentively. As long as the final balance
of its effects is positive, the reasons behind Anti-globalization feelings are examined.
The work finishes with a review of the issues that globalization poses for the future,
together with a study of the possible strategies to face it, from an European perspective,
and more specifically from the Spanish point of view.
