摘要：Access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities is an important prerequisite for improved health and for success in the fight against poverty. Yet across the world, around 1.1 billion people still lack access to a safe and sustainable water supply and 2.6 billion to adequate sanitation. Without increased efforts to address this problem, millions of people will continue to be locked in a cycle of poverty and disease. In adopting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2000, the countries of the world pledged inter alia to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015.
