摘要:This article examines the how conservative brown-lashing writers, such as Michael Crichton in State of Fear, are able to cast doubt on scientific consensus in the public mind, by exploiting science’s reliance on argumentation and uncertainty to advance knowledge. The psychology of distrust and the mechanisms that conservative politicians and writers have been using to promote it are explored and their dangerous consequences unveiled. Rather than examining the beneficial role that scientifically informed environmental fiction can play, this article demonstrates the significant political role of scientific misinformation that can also be filled by works of eco-fiction.
