摘要:The fourth dimension is a concept in physics and mathematics from the end
of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th which turned
established science on its head. The concepts of space, time and force had to be
rethought completely. The revolution produced affected art and all the
avant-garde movements became interested in it. This article focuses on Jules
Henri Poincaré, a leading light in the science of the time, who not only
investigated, but also thought about science and creativity. The article looks
at the repercussions his ideas had one artist in particular, Marcel Duchamp, who
was one of those who best grasped the science of his times and who studied the
subject widely. This comparison looks to explain art from the perspective of
science and science’s being inspired by art.
