摘要:The present work had as objective to determine the amounts of caffeine, theobromine,
theophylline and tannins of three mate morphotypes based on sampling of young and
mature leaves. Nitrogen in the leaves and in soil cores of the morphotypes was also
determined to establish correlations among the analysed variables. Statistical evaluation
was performed using ANOVA and simple correlation analysis. According to leaf color
and morphological characteristics, the morphotypes were named as amarelinha
(yellowish), cinza (gray) and sassafras and were collected in a commercial
plantation at Ivai do Sul County, Paraná state, in July 2002. The analytical results
showed high levels of caffeine, theobromine, tannins, total nitrogen in soil and total
nitrogen in leaves in the three morphotypes. The high level of nitrogen in the leaves is
related to its high contents in the soil cores. The lack of significant differences among
samples for nitrogen is a result of a homogeneous distribution of the organic matter in
the study area. Another aspect detected was the statistical differences between
young and mature leaves for theobromine as for tannins, among morphotypes and
between leaf ages. The cinza morphotype is the most appropriate for future
standardization studies for mate products due to its higher number of significant
correlations between the analysed variables.
