摘要：The Sculptor抯 Cave, Covesea, lies in a small bay on the south shore of the Moray Firth in northeast Scotland. It takes its name from a series of Pictish symbols carved on its entrance walls, and it was these that first drew the attention of archaeologists. Sylvia Benton, perhaps better known for her work in the Mediterranean, carried out the first series of excavations in 1929 and 1930, finding evidence for two major periods of activity. On the basis of associated metalwork, the earliest cultural deposits are dated to the Ewart Park phase of the Late Bronze Age, around 1000-800 BC. A later occupation layer contained a rich assemblage of Roman Iron Age material (coins, rings, pins, beads, bracelets, toilet instruments etc), ranging from the second to the fourth centuries AD.
