The objective of this study was to construct and determine validity of an instrument for the study of habitual leisure activities among Brazilian youth. The instrument is composed by 24 items, answered on a five point scale, similar to the Likert type. The sample comprised of 710 students of both sexes from the elementary and middle school aged from 11 to 22 years. The instrument was collectively applied in their classroom, in a non-identified protocol. The results are discussed in the light of literature about leisure activities among youth. Three factors were found by means of factorial analysis (PAF): hedonistic, playful and instructive habitual leisure activities. The Cronbach´s alpha to the first was satisfactory and the other two were acceptable. Thus, a revision of some items as well as a new application and psychometric testing are indicated.
