摘要:The microbiostatic efficacy of medical honey has been analyzed in detail in the past. Of greater importance from a clinical point of view are its microbiocidal properties.
This study presents data on the microbiocidal efficacy of medical honey (Medihoney™) based on the quantitative suspension tests according to the European Standards DIN EN 1040 and DIN EN 1275. The investigation revealed that medical honey, applied at a product concentration of 10%, possessed bactericidal activity against S. aureus in 24 h and 48 h in the absence of interfering substances as well as in the presence of 10% albumin with the recommended reduction factors (RF) of around 3 log. Against P. aeruginosa a RF >3 log or >6 log was obtained after 24 or 48 h, respectively. The antifungal activity against C. albicans was not as pronounced (RF >1.5 log). However, when tested under conditions without interfering substance, this activity equals that of a comparatively analyzed wound dressing containing nano-crystalline silver. In the presence of 10% albumin, the microbiocidal activity of medical honey was superior to the silver wound dressing. Since in clinical practice medical honey is applied undiluted, its microbiocidal potential in vivo is supposed to be considerably higher.
