摘要:This article presents the history of economics teaching in the Santa Catarina state,
with emphasis on the course currently offered by the Federal University of Santa Catarina
(UFSC), in the capital city of Florianópolis. Initially, the article looks for the origins of this kind of
teaching in Brazil during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with reference to the commercial
education in Portugal during the eighteenth century. It then shows that the economic
sciences course, established in 1943 with the name of Superior Course of Administration and
Finance, originated from the commercial training offered by the Academy of Commerce of Santa
Catarina, which was introduced in 1935 and succeeded other commercial high schools whose
older reference is from 1917. The Faculty of Economic Sciences was one of the founding entities
of UFSC in 1960. However, since the 1945 reform of the Brazilian commercial education, the
economics course became oriented towards economics as a science.
