TV Q & A: '57 film is not on DVD

David Inman The (Louisville, Ky.) Courier-Journal

Question: I was wondering if it were possible to find a movie that my sister and I used to watch every year at Christmastime. It was about a little girl who had to give her brothers and sisters away on Christmas Eve because they were orphaned. Can you help me?

Answer: That's the 1957 film "All Mine to Give," with Glynis Johns and Cameron Mitchell. People ask about it at this time every year. It's not on video or DVD.

Question: I seem to remember seeing a version of "It's a Wonderful Life" starring Marlo Thomas. I really enjoyed it and wonder if it is on video.

Answer: That's "It Happened One Christmas," a 1977 made-for- television movie that features Wayne Rogers as Thomas' husband, Orson Welles as the town bad guy and Cloris Leachman as the guardian angel. It's not yet on video.

Question: Can you tell me what happened to the USA network program "4200?" I believe that is what it was called. It just kind of vanished -- like the people on the program!

Answer: Hey, I'll do the jokes around here. The series is "The 4400," of course, and it is scheduled to return next summer for a third season.

Question: What's the song in the Target commercial that contains the lyric "say something new"?

Answer: The song you're thinking of is "Say Something New" by the Concretes, from their self-titled CD.

Question: There is a song on a commercial that is driving me crazy. I'm not even sure what product the commercial is advertising. The lyrics of the song go like this: "Thank you very much, thank you very much. It's the nicest thing that anyone's ever done for me." I think the song is from a Broadway musical, but for the life of me I can't remember where I have heard it before. Please help me retain my sanity and give me the name of the song and what play it comes from.

Answer: Actually, the song is from the 1970 film "Scrooge," which is a musical version of "A Christmas Carol." Albert Finney plays Scrooge, and the cast includes Alec Guinness and Edith Evans. The songs are by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. The movie's on video and DVD, if you're interested. And the commercial is for the Volkswagen Passat.

Question: In the early 1990s, I saw part of a movie with Helen Hunt and Eric Stoltz. He played a paraplegic, and she became his love interest. Can you tell me the name of the movie and if it's available?

Answer: That's the 1992 film "The Waterdance," which also stars Wesley Snipes and William Allen Young. It's on video and DVD.

Question: I have recently started watching the soap opera "The Young and the Restless," and I am wondering if the girl who plays Victoria Newman always played that part or if someone else played it before she supposedly went to live in Italy. I have a feeling someone else played that part. Am I right?

Answer: More than one actress playing the same role on a soap? That's just crazy talk!

You're right, of course. Victoria is currently played by Amelia Heinle, who took over the role from the most recent Victoria, Heather Tom. In all, four actresses have played Victoria.

Question: This one goes way back to the 1930s when I was a teen (I am now 80). I remember seeing a very funny movie called Ghost- something. Bob Hope was in it. But nobody seems to remember the name. Can you help? I don't think I have senile dementia yet!

Answer: That's "The Ghost Breakers," released in 1940. It also stars Paulette Goddard and Richard Carlson. It's on video and DVD.

Question: The music in the commercial for Grands biscuits sounds like an old song and the lyrics include the line "You've got possibilities." Help!

Answer: That song is from the cast recording of the 1966 Broadway show "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman." The vocalist is none other than Linda Lavin. It's on CD.
