Hubie the hero
Bill DoyleMarch: My Shot: Hubert Green, interviewed by Guy Yocom
As a longtime Hubie Green fan, I very much enjoyed your interview with him. But I was surprised to hear him say he had trouble showing affection to his children. This was hardly the person I saw at the Phoenix Open in the early '80s.
My son, Mike, who was 15 at the time, and I were following Hubie. Green stood near Mike while someone in his group putted out. Without looking at Mike directly, Green playfully poked him in the leg with his putter, and they both exchanged a good laugh. For several holes, Green sought us out and winked, smiled or nudged Mike. It was a special experience for both my son and me. Hubie knew exactly how to relate to a young boy.
