Latasha M. OwensArtist: Margaret Slade Kelly Trade: Painter
Impressionist painter Margaret Slade Kelly's colorful and textured works have repesented major venues like the 1997 Essence Music Festival, where her "Proud Mary" painting--a lively portrait of a jazz jam session--served as the official artwork for the event. Kelly credits much of her ability to capture the mood of music to her seven-year residence in New Orleans, where she says, "Art, music and food are celebrated as the pleasures of life." * A piece from her series Playing for Tips, which captures images of the blues using muted tones and bursts of color, was chosen by MCA Records as its national poster for Black Music Month in June. "Art is my life," she says. "Whether it be a musician playing an instrument or watching the interaction between mother and child, it inspires me."
