Why Gers are going NOWHERE!;
TERRY BUTCHER Tel tells it like it isRangers have spent heavily in their search for Euro glory.
So far David Murray has had ZILCH return on his investment.
I can see the logic behind his move for Kenny Dalglish - the name alone will encourage big name European players to move to Ibrox.
But it's youngsters Rangers need. Manchester United have the likes of Gary and Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and David Beckham.
True, Rangers pulled in youngsters Greg Shields and Scott Wilson.
But only through necessity rather than on merit - although both youngsters did well.
I see we are getting the usual claptrap about moral victories because Rangers only lost 1-0.
But the bottom line isfour games, four defeats and no points.
Just where we go from here is anyone's guess.
There is certainly no quick fix no matter how much money chairmen throw at managers.
The British public demand their football laced with pace, power and conpassion and detest the slow, patient build-up.
And until we change that attitude then I'm afraid our game is going nowhere.
United now have to beat Juventus in their next game at Old Trafford to stay alive.
Possible? Probable? Not the way they are playing at the moment.
Fergie celebrates his tenth anniversary at Old Trafford this week.
I would imagine though he's keeping the champagne on ice.
One bright spot of the week though. David Ginola's goal for Newcastle against Ferencvaros - now that was class finishing by any standard.
But then again he's a foreigner!
No place for an old Celt
I Hear Gary Gillespie has been bombed out by Coventry because Ron Atkinson reckons he can do without him.
Now that really surprises me. I've played against Gary when he was at Liverpool and I've watched him at Coventry and Celtic as well as Scotland.
He's always struck me as the quiet and thoughtful type who has never quite fulfilled his potential because of injury problems.
Clearly all is not well at Coventry, who appear to be going nowhere very fast.
I would have thought a player of Gillespie's cool temperament would be just what they need right now.
Maybe it's just that he refused to buy big Ron a drink!
So sweet
for Souey
I Would imagine Southampton manager Graeme Souness allowed himself an extra glass of champagne last Saturday night after that quite astonishing 6-3 win over United.
It is an open secret that there is not a lot of love lost between Old Trafford supremo Alex Ferguson and Souness - especially after Fergie left him out of the Scotland team in the final World Cup game against Uruguay in Mexico 1986.
And the two had some famous spats during games between Rangers and Aberdeen before Alex moved south to Old Trafford.
I also had my ups and downs with Graeme but we met up pre-season at Dunblane Hydro where Southampton were staying.
He struck me as being more subdued and mellow than the Souness of old.
But I'm willing to bet that stunning win had him crowing a bit!
Obscene
gestures
The escalating number of players getting into trouble for gestures to the crowd worries me.
Take the Bosnich business at White Hart Lane I accept was a joke that went badly wrong.
And now we have David Beckham in trouble for 'mooning' at the Dell, Leicester's Neil Lennon and Bury's goalkeeper Dean Kiely reported to the police for making gestures to the crowd.
The whole thing is now becoming a nonsense.
I've done my fair share of shouting and gesturing in my time. And I have also been on the receiving end of police action while at Ibrox.
The game though is all about passion and opinions but the gulf opening up between players and fans on how to express it worries me.
