Permanent print collection - Photographic Society Of America
John DeanOver the years, there has been very little publicity or visibility for the Permanent Print Collection of the Society and readers will wish to know that this committee is headed by Heinz Otto, FPSA, and is now under the Services Vice President's aegis. In recent months, Heinz has traveled to PSA Headquarters in Oklahoma City to record this 60-year collection of prints housed there. I want to tell you a bit about this prestigious Collection.
Images by many leading exhibition photographers in the world may be found in this PSA Permanent Print Collection with well known photographers represented including Karsh, Weston, Adams, Rothstein, Lang, Misonne, Hine and Ortiz-Echague. The Collection has many photographic techniques such as bromoil, paper negative, Fresson, calotype, multi-toning, metal-chrome and montage with outstanding examples represented. A few well-known PSA members whose works are in the Collection are Dan Heidel, FPSA; Wellington Lee, Hon PSA, FPSA; Joe Timmer, APSA; James Turnbull, Hon. PSA, FPSA; Ansel Adams and Adolf Fassbender, FPSA.
Chairman Otto's project is to record on slides, copies of representative works in the Collection for PSA members' viewing. A full program is planned for the 2004 International Conference in Bloomington, MN with a preview in Houston this September. Members attending the Houston conference will want to check the Division Center and view some of the slides of these fine prints at the Pictorial Print Division's table!
PSA members can be proud of the Society's Permanent Print Collection.
