Artforms - artist Philamona Williamson - Brief Article - Interview
Latasha M. OwensArtist: Philamona Williamson

Capturing the dreamlike gaze of children's eyes, Philamona Williamson, 48, tells the story of innocence poised on the threshold of adulthood. In her painting "Waking Slowly," adolescents' faces are drawn to show their excitement about growing up. Williamson says her 4-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son inspire her paintings of children, which are full of contrasts in fantasy and reality. "Art carries our culture and is at the heart of everything created. It's the enriching part of your life's work and the way to discover who you are again," says the native New Yorker. By blending "nature's striking combinations of color" with soulful human experience, Williamson uses her work on canvas to capture the poetic child inside us all.
