No kidding: don't get stoned
Jennifer PearsonIf you've ever passed a kidney stone--or been within a mile radius of someone who has--you know the excruciating pain it causes is something you want to avoid. Good news: If you're fit, you're well on your way. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that obese individuals are more likely to develop kidney stones than trimmer individuals. Scientists found a heightened risk of this malady in those who are either significantly overweight or have a high body-mass index. Larger body size may increase calcium and uric acid excretion in urine, which can boost the risk of kidney stones. This leads the researchers to believe that more bodyfat may contribute to the stones' formation. Hey, it's just another reason to hit the gym.
